How to Use AI Ethically for Your Research

Course content. What am I allowed to do with AI in my research? How can I easily comply with the university's rules? How do I make sure using AI still leads to good scientific work? And that it doesn't make my mind duller? My judgement weaker? In this hands-on workshop, you answer these questions, using your own research.

You review the wide spectrum of stances on AI use internationally in research institutions, including your own university's guidelines. You discuss what may be the current highest international scientific standards on this question, in its three main strands. Those concern: data safety (what data may you or may you not put into which AI tools?), authorship and responsibility (how can you verify that you retain your own authorship?), documentation and disclosure (how to document and disclose your use of AI according to the highest guidelines?).

I will bring two custom-designed AI systems ("skills") to help you log and document your work with AI and detect hallucinated sources and citations.

Goals. You learn to:

  • apply to your own research the AI rules and guidelines that bind you (from your university or a journal you want to publish in);
  • decide which of your data may go into which tool, and which may not;
  • verify that you retain your authorship and judgement in all AI-supported work;
  • use and customise a dedicated AI system that documents your AI use in the specific form you need;
  • verify sources and citations for hallucinations, and know when to use AI for that and when not to;
  • check and improve AI-assisted work until it meets your own standard;
  • verify that you work with AI in a way that leaves your own critical thinking and domain competence sharper, not duller.

Format. Every course can take different shapes: in person, online or both, as one intensive block or spread over several weeks, shorter or longer. Length, format and all practical details are open: we agree them together, and I adapt the course to what your institution needs.
